College Essay Format

To respect the standards of presentation, follow these guidelines.

Paper: Unlined 8½”x 11” white paper. Clip or staple the pages.

Print: Black, letter-quality type and not draft type.

Margins: 1” margins all around; ragged right margin; do not justify

Type Font and Size: Standard font as Times New Roman or Arial; regular font size of 10 or 12 points.

Spacing: Double-space between the lines and list of works cited

Paragraphing: Start a new paragraph with one half inch from the left margin; no additional line between paragraphs.

Page numbers: Usually in the top right margin.

Title and identification on the first page: MLA student paper (see the model)

Title and identification on a separate page: Use it only if your teacher requires it. Generally, a title page will center the title, your name, the course information, and the date.
